Mundelein, IL, February 14, 2008 – Sysmex America, Inc. announced today the availability of new software on the XT-V® Series automated hematology analyzers for the multi-species testing market. This software enables veterinarians and scientists performing pre-clinical trials, comparative hematology and toxicology studies to benefit from highly accurate, species-specific measurements of both normal and abnormal hematology samples.

Rat, mouse, monkey, dog, cat, rabbit, guinea pig and horse species have been predefined in the software for ease of use in multi-species testing laboratories.  Twenty additional species categories can be created.  Unlimited profile storage is available.   The manual gating feature allows individual facilities to define their own reference populations as needed.

As documented in published data, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), used in animal respiratory studies, has been analyzed on the Sysmex XT-V analyzer. Other samples that can be tested include whole blood and body fluids, including CSF and serous fluids.

“The XT-V analyzers utilize an established platform and technology that has been placed in thousands of diagnostic hematology laboratories worldwide.  Sysmex’s patented fluorescent flow cytometry technique provides a WBC differential with information about cellular size and internal cell structure,” said Margaret Triola, Sysmex America Senior Product Manager.  “Applying this technology to the multi-species marketplace, with software designed specifically for animal testing, allows this advanced analyzer to be utilized in new areas.”

“In addition to the pre-set gating supplied for numerous animal species, the Sysmex XT-V allows the investigator to establish suitable profiles and gating for numerous species and sample types.  Once a new profile has proven to be acceptable, it is stored for future studies. This offers a major advantage to investigators.  In drug development and medical studies, for example, the XT-V provides an automated approach to study the different hematological profiles of transgenic mice while using small sample volumes,” said Triola.

The XT-2000i V Automated Hematology Analyzer, part of the XT-V Series, uses a software package that provides 24 different blood parameters, including the RBC, WBC, 5-part differential and reticulocyte count.  The XT-2000i V, which utilizes fluorescent flow cytometry and advanced cell-counting methods, is capable of providing excellent low-end and high-end linearity and accuracy for measured animal parameters.  The small sample size of 85 µl for all tests, including reticulocytes lends itself to animal testing, where very little sample may be available for analysis.  The robust design of the system is demonstrated by the negligible interference of clots in the internal components of the XT-V analyzer.

The Sysmex XT-V series is also unique in its ability to allow the operator to perform manual gating of cell populations, giving laboratorians the ability to customize and store individual populations for use in long term protocols. The ability to create additional profiles and re-analyze data with revised gates provides a unique way for scientists to review study data.    For more information about the XT-V Series, contact Sysmex at 866-7SYSMEX.
