Challenges in the Evaluation of Thrombocytopenia in Newborns

12:00 PM to 1:00PM (Americas) Central Time (US & Canada)

Dr.Martha Sola-Visner, MD Children’s Hospital, Boston MA Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Harvard University

This session will review the incidence, clinical significance, and management of thrombocytopenia in neonates. Dr. Sola-Visner will discuss the developmental differences in platelet formation, platelet function, and primary hemostasis, then review the utility of current tools for the mechanistic evaluation of thrombocytopenia, including recent studies on IPF.

  • Describe the incidence of thrombocytopenia in neonates, its clinical significance, and the world-wide differences in management
  • Review the key developmental differences that exist between neonates and adults in platelet function and primary hemostasis, and their impact on therapeutic decisions
  • Understand the need for improved tests to evaluate platelet production and function, and to guide transfusion decisions, in this population
