The Future of Quality Control – Evidence Based QC

Scott Lesher, Director of Technical Support Services, Sysmex America, Inc., Lincolnshire, IL

Hematology analyzers have changed over time, but our quality control process and procedures have remained the same. QC of analytical tests has been a problem since the start of the clinical laboratory. Improper control processes can lead to inaccurate patient results, higher lab expenses, and hinder technologists in following quality procedures. New tools like evidence based control limits now allow improved QA efficiencies and error detection on the analytical system.

Objectives:

  • Understand basic control process issues and why repeating controls can decrease QA processes.
  • Identify analytical quality using more than variables of standard deviation.
  • Define evidence based control limits using six sigma methods and how to implement these within the lab.
