HbA1c: A Diabetic Marker of Increasing Importance

Diabetes is a growing epidemic and there is tremendous focus on ensuring that patients are diagnosed early before they become diabetic. The detection of hemoglobin variants plays an important role in providing the laboratorian with an A1c result that is reliable. With increased cultural diversification the presence of hemoglobin variants in any given population cannot be overlooked. This session will present the disease statistics, discuss the various testing methodologies available, and review the combination of HPLC for A1c testing on an automated line which can improve workflow, turnaround time and patient care.

Objectives:

  • Describe the importance of HbA1c testing by automated HPLC methods.
  • Discuss the use of HbA1c for screening and diagnosis.
  • Explain the limitations of various methods used for A1c testing.
