10/19/2016
12:00 PM to 1:00PM (Americas) Central Time (US & Canada)

Paul Epner, MBA, M.Ed., Executive Vice President, Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine; Past President, CLMA, Chicago, IL

Reimbursement changes demand that clinical laboratories demonstrate value, in addition to operational efficiency, which requires shifting from a “factory-model” to a “healthcare provider” model. This presentation will explore the nature of that shift and the evidence for its necessity. We will describe a future in which the clinical laboratory becomes the health system’s most valuable support area and the strategies and tools to make it happen.

Objectives:

  • Explain the difference between operational efficiency and clinical effectiveness, as well as the relative importance of each
  • Describe how clinical laboratory medicine can cause patient harm and the challenges in quantifying the patient impact, both harm and benefits
  • Assess strategies appropriate for the attendee’s health system that can drive increased value from the clinical laboratory
