Platelets – Purpose, Pictures plus Problems

This presentation takes an in depth look at the function of platelets, describes their role in the clotting process, and explores conditions that can trigger platelet activation. In addition, specific disease states involving platelets will be reviewed and case studies will be presented to demonstrate platelet involvement and associated clinical outcomes.

Objectives:

  • Explain the basic function of platelets and define their role in the clotting process
  • Identify several platelet disease states that demonstrate thrombocytopenia or thrombocytosis
  • Describe the clinical utility of the Immature Platelet Fraction (IPF) in accessing bone marrow activity and effective thrombopoiesis
