Thrombocytopenia is defined as a platelet count below the normal adult reference range of approximately 150–450 × 10³/µL. When platelet levels fall below 20 × 10³/µL, patients face a significant risk of spontaneous bleeding, making accurate platelet measurement critical for clinical decision-making. However, obtaining reliable platelet counts—especially in severely thrombocytopenic samples—can be technically challenging for laboratories. Advanced platelet counting technologies, such as fluorescence-based methods, can improve accuracy in these situations.
