This sample (see PDF) was from a 79 year old male. A CBC was ordered to rule out anemia.

The “WBC Abnormal Scattergram” flag was generated due to the positioning of the cell populations on the scatterplot and the inability of the analyzer to separate the atypical lymphocytes and the monocytes. The “Blasts/Abn Lympho?” and “Atypical Lympho?” flags were generated because of the number of cellular events falling in those regions on the WDF scattergram.

The discrepancy between the automated monocyte count and is likely due to the large atypical lymphocytes which were included with the monocyte population by the analyzer. The “Monocytosis” flag indicates the monocyte results are above the user defined review limits for monocytes % and/or #.

The specialized reagents and algorithm used in the WPC channel (only available on XN-20™ modules) allows for separation of the blast cells and abnormal lymphocytes. While WPC testing does not provide reportable parameters, use of this channel may help eliminate flagging that leads to unnecessary manual differential review.
