LIVE WEBINAR | Heparin Monitoring: Navigating the Assays and Result Interpretation
Presented by: Andrew J. Goodwin IV, M.D., Professor at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, Interim Chair for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Anatomic and Clinical Pathology for UVM Health

Monitoring heparin therapy remains complex due to variability in patient response and factors that can influence lab results. Both APTT and anti-Xa assays are affected by preanalytical, analytical, and clinical variables that may impact interpretation. During this session, the speaker will review the fundamentals of heparin therapy, evaluate commonly used monitoring methods, and discuss the application of test results in real-world clinical practice.

Main Objectives:
  • Describe the clinical indications, pharmacologic mechanisms of action, and therapeutic goals of unfractionated heparin and low-molecular-weight heparin therapy.
  • Compare the laboratory methods used to monitor heparin therapy, including activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), anti-factor Xa assays, and other relevant coagulation testing methodologies.
  • Evaluate the strengths, limitations, and potential sources of analytical interference associated with commonly used heparin monitoring assays.
  • Apply these principles of heparin monitoring to clinical case studies to interpret laboratory results and understand impact on patient management.
