Thrombopoiesis - Immature Platelet Fraction (IPF)

Immature Platelet Fraction, a direct cellular indicator of thrombopoietic activity may aid physicians in assessing and monitoring thrombocytopenias.

Watch: A Pediatric hematologist's perspective

Our Advanced Clinical Parameters (ACPs) expand the routine CBC beyond traditional use and may assist clinicians with patient care. Dr. Kandace Gollomp, pediatric hematologist/oncologist at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, describes how Reticulocyte Hemoglobin Equivalent (RET-He) and Immature Platelet Fraction (IPF) can be included in order sets or reflex testing as part of their patient workups.

The Immature Platelet Fraction (IPF%) and the Immature Platelet Fraction Count (IPF#) may help physicians better understand the pathophysiological mechanisms leading to low platelet counts.

The immature platelet fraction (IPF) is a laboratory measurement analogous to the reticulocyte count, but reflecting the thrombopoietic state. It can be expressed as a percent (IPF%=percent of platelets that are immature) or as an absolute number per μl blood; the immature platelet count (IPC=IPF% × platelets per μl of blood).
